Goodyear,
AZ, USA - 28/01/2009
Phoenix's
Goodyear Airport was originally
constructed during World War
II as a storage and preservation
base for the surplus and obsolete
airframes belonging to the
US Navy, US Marine Corps and
the US Coast Guard. At the
time it was known as NAF Litchfield
Park. In 1968 the Military
Aircraft Storage and Disposition
Centre (MASDC) took over the
role at Davis-Monthan AFB.
Consequently Litchfield Park
was slated for closure and
was procured by the city of
Phoenix to act as a General
Aviation airfield for the
city, and in doing so reducing
some of the pressures on Sky
Harbor.
While
no commercial airlines currently
operate scheduled services
from the site, there is always
a large number of airliners
present. Aero Turbine Inc
operates a maintenance, storage
and disposal facility on the
airfield with many types (predominantly
737s) currently stored on
the northside of the airfield.
It was these that prompted
our visit.

A
nice way to spend an hour,
and it was interesting to
see the two Thomson 767s sitting
out there.
