Wittmund
AB , Germany - 18th May 2006
After
hearing that JG-71, "The
Richthofen" were to host
a photocall and having looked
at the logs from the event
in 2004, this was a no-brainer!
We simply had to be there!
A group of about a dozen of
us flew out of Luton the previous
evening bound for Bremen.
When
we awoke the weather was (typically,
and as forecast) foul. We
had about a two hour drive
ahead of us, so there was
a vague hope that it might
be better there. However,
when we arrived it was lagging
it down and there was no break
in sight as we were bussed
onto the active side of the
airfield (the admin side and
the live side are separated
by a good few miles and on
opposite sides of a road).
Somehow,
after about an hour the clouds
did decide to part and we
were treated to a rather pleasant
remainder of the day. Not
something that any of us had
anticipated.
A
small static display had been
assembled, and we were told
we'd then get to see seven
Phantoms departed.

Once
they were all back on the
deck the photocall ended and
we made our way outside for
a few hours.

A
day that started off with
little hope ended with us
all having had a rather good
day!
